Burn-Injured Children & Family Support

Support for burn-injured children and their family starts at regional burn centers. Typically, a severe burn requires emergent, specialized treatment at a regional burn center. Burn-Injured children are quickly transported from a local hospital to a regional burn center, with a family caregiver following the child’s transport to the burn center.

Arriving in an unknown city, navigating a large burn center, and ensuring the care of their burn-injured child can be overwhelming for a family caregiver. The Caregiver Comfort Kit is designed to provide some basic comforts for the child’s caregiver in the first few days at a burn center. The kit includes hygiene supplies, travel blanket and pillow, caregiver support information, and information about the SC Burned Children’s Fund.

Continued support of burn-injured children and their families is provided because burns require multiple out-patient burn center visits. Additional support from SC Burned Children’s Fund includes travel assistance, connecting with other burn survivors and caregivers, specialty burn-care garments, and other miscellaneous needs.

Camp ‘Can’ Do

For over 25 years, Camp ‘Can’ Do has been an overnight summer camp for burned children ages 6 to 17 in South Carolina.

Camp ‘Can’ do provides burned children with transformative experiences that build friendships, develop life skills, and foster a can-do attitude.

Burn nurses and medical staff, firefighters, and former campers volunteer their time and energy to this great week every summer for burned children campers.

Burn Awareness & Prevention Education Grant

The Burn Awareness & Prevention Education Grant is available for fire service, injury prevention, and health care organizations. Priority consideration is given to those organizations that are active sponsors of the Burned Children’s Fund. The maximum amount of an individual grant is $500.00 to each participating organization.

The purpose of the grant program is to provide assistance to organizations who participate in burn awareness and fire prevention related educational activities.

Burn Care & Safety Materials

The South Carolina Burned Children’s Fund identifies pediatric burn trends in South Carolina and designs and publishes burn care and safety materials to support education in the state. The Fund can provide burn care and safety materials to fire departments and other fire and burn safety organizations in South Carolina to educate the public.

The Fund provides burn education and treatment information to pediatric burn survivors and their families. Burn education and treatment information is distributed to burn centers where South Carolina pediatric patients are likely to be treated. Published education and treatment information is sourced from the American Burn Association and the Phoenix Society For Burn Survivors.
